We are building a development of 14 homes sitting on what was formerly the residence of high-ranking service personnel nearly 100 years ago.

The 14 four and five bedroom homes at DCH’s ‘Fort Gardens’ development in Crownhill Plymouth sit on the site of a former Commanders House built in 1934 which recently needed major redevelopment. The original house was constructed for the Commanding Officer of Seaton Barracks and also housed those working to defend the Royal Dockyard at Devonport from the possibility of a French attack, under the leadership of Napoleon III.

The homes will be launched at an event on the 20 October in Crownhill Fort for those looking to buy a home with a piece of Plymouth’s historical past.

Jen White DCH Development Marketing Manager said: “The new homes will be an exciting addition to the area of Crownhill and one which offers the chance for people to own a unique piece of Plymouth’s history. The new development is on what was originally the glacis of the Fort, which is a slope to defend the Fort against enemy fire and keep any approaching invader in full open view so the views are great!.”

The site sits on the upper slopes of Crownhill which is home to Crownhill Fort, a Royal Commission Fort built in the 1860s as part of Lord Palmerston's ring of land defences for Plymouth. Crownhill Fort was then used as a depot and store for the Royal Garrison Artillery manning the Plymouth defences and after WWII was used as barracks for the Garrison HQ and minor units. It was abandoned by the MoD in 1983 and purchased by the Landmark Trust in 1986.

As well as affordable homes for rent and shared ownership DCH also builds homes for open market sale. DCH delivered 608 new affordable homes for rent and sale this year, together with 147 for outright sale which means we have been able to provide our biggest ever annual total of 755 new homes. If you would like to attend the launch of Fort Gardens on the 20th October from 4-7pm at Crownhill Fort, Plymouth, please contact Connells on 01752 674467.
