HRH The Princess Royal opens housing scheme in Flushing

Devon & Cornwall Housing (DCH) was delighted to welcome HRH The Princess Royal to officially open their affordable housing scheme in Flushing on Tuesday 6 December 2011.

Residents meeting HRH

The Princess learned first-hand from the residents what a difference affordable housing makes to their lives and the benefits of being able to stay in the area they grew-up.

The average house price in Flushing is over £300k which makes it difficult for local people to own or rent a house meaning that moving away from the area could be the only option for some people.

HRH meets VIPsTregew Meadow in Flushing cost £1.3m to develop the 10 homes – seven rented properties and three shared ownership properties. The Homes & Communities Agency invested £538,500 into the scheme along with Cornwall Council’s investment of £25k.

The Princess was shown around two properties and met shared-owners Mr & Mrs Bromley and rented tenants Mr & Mrs Collins. She commemorated the official opening by planting a tree at the top of Tregew Meadow.

The Princess was introduced to various partners who were instrumental in making the scheme a success including: Councillor John Symons - Vice Chairman of Mylor Parish Council, Councillor John Dyer - Vice Chairman of Cornwall Council, Versha Koria - Homes and Communities Agency, David Savage – Trewin Design, Craig Currie – Mansell, David Fergusson – MBA, plus many more stakeholders.

HRH and our Group ChairAngela Dupont, Group Chair of DCH said; “On behalf of Devon & Cornwall Housing and the residents of Tregew Meadow, I am delighted to welcome Your Royal Highness to this official opening of our much sought after affordable housing scheme.

“You have had the opportunity to see our development, and been able to hear first-hand from residents how affordable homes have helped change lives.

“In creating this new part of the Flushing community, our thanks must go to the Homes & Communities Agency and Cornwall Council for their significant investment, and to Mylor Parish Council and the Trefusis Estate for their support. Thanks also go to Mansell, the contractor, surveyor Taylor Lewis and architect Trewin Design who have worked with Westco Properties, our development subsidiary”.

Demand was extremely high for these properties with more than 300 people applying for one of the 10 affordable homes.

Devon & Cornwall Housing continues to work with Cornwall Council to establish new opportunities in Flushing to house local people who would not otherwise have the opportunity of a home in the parish.
