Skills to the forefront

With the aim of building confidence and improving relationships with its thousands of residents throughout Cornwall, Penwith Housing Association (PHA), part of Devon & Cornwall Housing group, is celebrating the success of its new learning programme.

Pictured: Claire Welsh (PHA) with resident and ALfR award winner Jenny BeamishResidents who are active in their communities can achieve a nationally recognised qualification ‘Active Learning for Residents’ (ALfR) - by using their skills and experience.Several are already taking part and because of its success the association is to train more staff to support them.

One of the successful residents is Jenny Beamish of Newlyn, for many years Chair of the Gwavas Residents Association and a member of PHA’s Peninsula Tenants’ Committee. She said: “It has refreshed the whole relationship between the landlord and residents for me” she remarked. “If I can do it and pass on that knowledge to others it may persuade them to take part – especially young people. They would find it interesting and rewarding to work up the various levels with the help on offer.I have found my experience in the housing sector over the years has also been a great help.”

Leanda Flower, PHA’s customer engagement manager commented: “PHA has signed up to ALfR which is a modular programme, developed and accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing to an NVQ Level 2 qualification. Tenants work through the course at their own pace, with backing from mentors. ALfR recognises the skills the residents gain as they work to change their communities for the better, enabling them to tailor their learning to their surroundings, work at their own speed and reflect on real life challenges and successes.”She continued: “This strengthens active residents’ contribution to their neighbourhoods – and supports the Devon and Cornwall Housing group strategy to make sure our homes and communities are great places to live. It also enables PHA to be more responsive to the needs of the residents.”

There are a variety levels and awards available. Residents interested in this project can contact the customer engagement team on 0300 303 8030.
