Volunteer case studies
Have you thought about volunteering?
Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, meet new people and expand your horizons…or even just to learn something new.

DCH advertised for befrienders, drivers, arts/crafts helpers and Venita contacted DCH to offer her support. Venita works for the NHS as a Reiki Practitioner for the paediatric oncology department and also for a local Yoga Studio.
Venita now runs relaxation classes at Astor Court, Plymouth weekly and is keen to get involved in other services, such as our Plymouth Foyer (our Young Persons accommodation service) and our Plymouth MHAS (Mental Health Accommodation Services).
Claire works in DCH facilities admin in the Ker Street office in Plymouth and approached our Volunteer Coordinator as she has a creative and musical background and wanted to offer her support to DCH residents.
Claire is currently offering one to one piano lessons to a number of our residents in MHAS (Mental Health Accommodation Services). Residents come along to enjoy the music and the staff see it very much as a relaxation session as much as a music lesson.
Claire is due to begin an arts and crafts workshop in the coming weeks to support the DCH Activities Coordinator.
Trudy has been with DCH since 2012 and is a real support to the team at the DCH extra care scheme Devonport Views in Plymouth
Trudy is registered blind and in the past has found it difficult to find good quality volunteer opportunities, as many organisations had concerns around health and safety due to her visual impairment.
Trudy volunteered at DCH when an opportunity came from a Big Lottery funded project, lead by the RNIB called Extending the Reach. This project aims to extend successful volunteer placements for the visually impaired by offering organisations part funding in order to turn that volunteer role into a paid one.
Trudy said: "It has been a dream come true for me and normally people like me don't get to have great opportunities such as working for a company like DCH."
Lauren works for BT and has recently completed her Psychology degree and is passionate about training as a social worker for young people.
Lauren currently volunteers once a week at Ayres Close, Barnstaple in North Devon for DCH and has quickly established herself as a valued member of the team.
Sonya Hines, Support Officer at DCH for Ayres Close says: "Lauren is a pleasure to work with, she comes in with bags of ideas and enthusiasm. It's incredible to think she works full time including most weekends, and on her rare day off she chooses to spend it with us here at Ayres Close."
